Hawaii Spinner Dolphin
Spinner dolphins are the most commonly found cetacean in the Hawaiian Islands. They average a lenth of 6 feet plus (2 m) and 180 pounds plus (82 kg). The size of their pods range from 10-100 individuals. Spinners travel far offshore at night to their feeding grounds and return close to shore each morning to rest. Rest behavior is characterized by swimming in tight groups, surfacing synchronously to breathe and gliding along the sandy bottom in a "carpet" formation. Aerial activity, such as spins, head and tail slappings, increases as they "awaken" during the late morning hours and through the afternoon.
Dolphins are part of the same family as whales and porpoises (called cetaceans) which include the world's largest and most diverse group of living animals. They are not fish but air-breathing, warm-blooded mammals that nurse their young. Over fifteen species of wild dolphins live in or migrate to waters surrounding Hawaii. The Hawaiian spinner dolphin, Pantropical spotted dolphin and bottlenose dolphin are the species most frequently seen in Hawaii oceans.
