Parrotfish (Uhu)
Parrotfish, known as uhu in Hawaiian, grace the shallow, tropical seas across the globe. Easily recognizable by their parrot-like beaks, fused teeth, and vibrant colors, these oceanic wonders showcase a unique blend of beauty and functionality. With a distinctive, bluntly-rounded head and large scales, Parrotfish navigate their habitats with lazy rowing motions of their pectoral fins.
These herbivores primarily graze on fine seaweeds that grow on rocks or dead coral surfaces. Some species, like the spectacled parrotfish, may also feed on living coral, leaving grooves on rocks as they scrape for food. Equipped with hard, grinding plates in their throats, Parrotfish crush rocks into fine powder, contributing significantly to reef erosion and the production of sand.
Active by day, Parrotfish seek shelter among rocks and coral during the night. Smaller individuals create cocoons of mucus for protection, masking their scent from night-active predators. Despite their vibrant appearance, Parrotfish can display different color patterns based on age and sex, adding to the challenge of classification.
In Hawaiian culture, Parrotfish (Uhu) holds special significance, with various names reflecting their different sizes and color forms. Renowned as a favorite fish among early Hawaiians, Parrotfish are deeply embedded in Hawaiian legends, attesting to their prominence on the reefs.
